PROJECT SUMMARY FOR 2001-JR-BX-KOO1 S2
The Survey of Youth in Residential Placement (SYRP) is a study designed to produce national estimates of the demographic characteristics, background and institutional experiences of young offenders in residential facilities. SYRP will collect critical information on conditions of confinement; victimization; substance abuse, health and mental health needs and treatment utilization; and educational needs and services for juvenile offenders in placement. In-depth information will be provided on current offenses for which juveniles are being held in custody as well as their prior experiences with the juvenile justice system. Currently, no national data are collected on the characteristics and needs of these youth from their perspective. SYRP will also update the information collected by BJS in the Survey of Youth in Custody done in 1987.
