This fiscal 2001 Annual Report of the U.S. Justice Department's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) presents information and statistics on OJJDP's sponsorship of research, demonstration, and training initiatives designed to improve State and local juvenile programs and benefit private youth-serving agencies.

Abstract

Following an introductory section on OJJDP's background, mission, activities, and organization, the report presents an overview of its major accomplishments in fiscal 2001. As described throughout the report, OJJDP's programs and activities during fiscal 2001 have focused on combating juvenile violent crime. This has been done through activities that support research and statistics; program development, testing, and demonstration; replication; training and technical assistance; and information dissemination. In the latter case, OJJDP recently began to change its approach to information dissemination, relying more on its Web site (ojjdp.ncjrs.org) to disseminate information and exploring the advantages of electronic publishing. In addition, OJJDP is targeting its mailings of publications and solicitations to more carefully defined audiences. Following an overview of OJJDP's major accomplishments for fiscal 2001, the report's chapters address its activities in promoting early intervention and delinquency prevention, strengthening the juvenile justice system, enhancing public safety and law enforcement, reducing the victimization of children, addressing youth gangs, improving conditions for Tribal youth, collecting information on juveniles in custody, and means of information dissemination. Appended OJJDP publications produced in fiscal 2001
