Mental Health Association in Morgan County is the fiscal agent for The Morgan County Substance Abuse Network (MCSAN). The drug prevention coalition is now in its 21st year serving Morgan County, Alabama and is completing the fourth year of the Drug-Free Communities Support Program Grant. MCSAN's primary mission is to reduce and to eliminate the causes and impact of substance abuse among youth. Its dual goals are to: 1) reduce substance abuse among youth and 2) strengthen community collaboration among community-based, private and governmental entities in order to prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth. The proposed project will implement these programs: Project I.D; MochaTeen Coffeehouse; "Given the Opportunity" Youth Grants; Red Ribbon Youth March; Child Safety Conference; Parent Training; SAAS Program; and Drugs Don't Work Partnership. All programs emphasize the following strategies:
1) reduce known risk factors that put elementary age children at a higher risk for ATOD use;
2) reduce risk factors and enhance protective factors related to first use or casual use by middle school-aged youth;
3) increase involvement of rural and socially disadvantaged youth in substance abuse prevention activities; and
4) enhance personal competencies in children of all ages that improve their drug resistance skills.
