PROJECT SUMMARY FOR 98-JN-FX-0022 (S-4)

Adelante Juntos Coalition (AJC) is a coalition of nine mining towns in rural Arizona. AJC operates on the premise that long-term alcohol, tobacco, inhalants, and other drug use prevention can only occur when the needs and concerns of the target population are the primary focus of a comprehensive strategy. AJC proposes a strategy that includes a more active collaboration strategy by the current participating members, a concerted effort to include the higher risk youth and families, and the expansion of current science-based curricula for youth and families. AJC outlines the following as goals and objectives for this project: 1) to educate youth to become critical consumers about drug-related media and entertainment messages and empower them to understand the risk associated with those substances; 2) empower parents of children ages 8-14 to reduce the risk that their children will develop problems with alcohol, tobacco, inhalants, and other drugs during adolescence; 3) provide Mexican American cultural enrichment programs for youth in the mining communities that will reinforce cultural pride, reduce cultural conflict, and create a future foundation free of alcohol and other drugs; and 4) monitor progress toward coalition goals and objectives through the collection, analysis, and dissemination of key process and outcome indicators. Specific activities include: establishing a rural media literacy group, designing a joint Community Media Literacy Student Media Action environmental campaign, piloting the Strengthening Families Program, conducting parenting training of trainers workshops using the Preparing for Drug-Free Years curriculum, and survey AJC Steering Committee members, youth participants, and community members.
