PROJECT SUMMARY FOR 95-JN-FX-K012 (S-5)
The Urban Institute has been conducting the cross-site evaluation of SafeFutures demonstrations since their 1995/96 inception in six communities. The sites - Boston, MA; Costra Costa County, CA; Fort Belknap, MT; Imperial County, CA; Seattle, WA; and St. Louis, MO - are on slighly different funding schedules; some will conclude their SafeFutures initiatives during 2001, while others (e.g. Boston) will continue into 2002. On-going discussions with the OJJDP Research and Program Development Division (RPDD) program monitor and the SafeFutures coordinator for the Special Emphasis Division (SED) determined that the cross-site evalution should continue for approximately one year beyond the demonstrations to: 1) assess the sustainability and institutionalization fo local SafeFutures program/services inthe period after OJJDP funding ends, and 2) conclude data collection and analysis. The National Evaluation of SafeFutures addresses five core areas of crucial concerns: 1) community assessment, at baseline (pre-completion of strategic planning) and on an on-going basis; 2) strategic planning; 3) program implementation of activities identified in the strategic plan, including policies, practices, programs, and services not directly funded under the SafeFutures demonstration; 4) service linkages and coordination at the direct service provision level (i.e., client point of contact with the system); and 5) program outcomes.
