This In-Practice Tip Sheet explains 19 operational steps for juvenile drug treatment court (JDTC) teams in implementing the JDTC Guidelines of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFC).
Abstract
An introductory statement notes that this is not an exhaustive list of practice tips, so JDTC teams are encouraged to use this NCJFCJ In-Practice TIP Sheet Series as a starting point in making program improvements or implementing the JDTC Guidelines. Tips are provided for implementing each of the following 19 JDTC guidelines: 1) case planning and management; 2) clearly defined target population and eligibility criteria; 3) collaborative planning; 4) community partnerships; 5) comprehensive treatment planning; 6) confidentiality; 7) contingency management: goal-oriented responses; 8) culture competence; 9) developmentally appropriate services; 10) drug testing; 11) educational linkages; 12) family engagement; 13) focus on strengths; 14) gender-appropriate services (boys, girls, and LGBTQI-GNC youth); 15) judicial involvement and supervision; 16) monitoring and evaluation; 17) program structure and management: using phases effectively; 18) teamwork; and 19) terminations. For each of these 19 steps, a case study is first presented of a U.S. juvenile drug court’s effective implementation of the step, followed by detailed tips on how JDTC teams can implement the step.
