This fact sheet describes the Promising and Effective Practices Network (PEPNet), which identifies and promotes effective youth development and employment programs, maintains an extensive database resource, has created a framework for developing quality program, and has developed a national recognition system.
Abstract
The Department of Labor funds the program; the National Youth Employment Coalition (NYEC) administers it. NYEC recently completed a study in cooperation with other organizations that suggested that employment and career-focused programs could prepare juvenile offenders for a successful transition to the workforce if the programs were comprehensive, sustained, and connected to further education or long-term career opportunities. PEPNet provides information, materials, and publicity to organizations working with juvenile offenders in both residential and community systems. PEPNet has also designated 58 youth programs as PEPNet Awardees. Organizations seeking the award complete a 40-page application detailing how their program meets PEPNet’s five criteria: (1) purpose and activities, (2) organization and management, (3) youth development, (4) workforce development, and (5) evidence of success. Five award-winning programs are located in New York, NY; York, PA; Baltimore, MD; and New Waverly and Austin, TX. Sources of further information
