Abstract
The Missing Children’s Assistance Act of 1984 authorized Federal funding for the establishment and operation of a national resource center and clearinghouse dedicated to improvement in managing cases of missing and exploited children. Since April 1984, the NCMEC has worked in partnership with the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) in performing its mandated functions. The NCMEC has the following five mandated functions: (1) Establishment and operation of a toll-free hotline; (2) The promotion of information-sharing and technical assistance through networking with regional and non-profit organizations, State clearinghouse, and law enforcement agencies; (3)The provision of technical assistance to parents, law enforcement, and other agencies that work on issues related to missing and exploited children; (4) The development of publications that contain practical, timely information; and (5) The provision of information on programs that offer free or low-cost transportation services that assist in reuniting children with their families. Details on these operations and related accomplishments are presented.
