Abstract
This literature review discusses the relationship between mental health and juvenile justice system involvement, barriers to mental health treatment, and evidence-based programs and practices shown to improve outcomes for youth with mental health needs. It also provides definitions of some key mental health terms. The review includes information about substance misuse as a mental health problem, but this topic is covered more comprehensively in the Model Programs Guide literature reviews Substance Use Prevention Programs and Substance Use Treatment Programs.
