This toolkit is intended to assist service providers, program administrators, researchers, policy analysts, and key stakeholders who are supporting Latina youth in programs intended to decrease the number of youth who become involved in the juvenile justice system.

Abstract

This Mi Hermana's Keeper Toolkit is a response to the White House's Initiative called "My Brother's Keeper," which addresses persistent opportunity gaps faced by young men of color and works to ensure that all young people can reach their full potential. The toolkit provides guidance for the design and implementation of effective culturally responsive practices that support Latina youth at risk of placement in juvenile detention. The toolkit contains recommendations, action steps for each recommendation, and targeted resources. The recommendations offered are derived from the themes identified by Latina youth, their caregivers, and key stakeholders. The toolkit is offered with the intent that other community-based and school-based programs will implement the proposed evidence-based recommendations and action steps. The action steps are intended to be culturally responsive, gender-specific, trauma-informed, strengths-based, and developmentally appropriate services for Latina youth at risk of placement in juvenile detention. This toolkit reflects the mission of Southwest Key Programs, which is a national nonprofit organization that designs, implements, and replicates community-based treatment programs for Federal, State, and local agencies. 57 references
