Abstract

This podcast episode, “Speaking the Language,” discusses the Opioid Affected Youth Initiative’s efforts to meet the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, and asexual/aromantic/agender (LGBTQIA) community, especially those hit hard by substance misuse and its harmful outcomes. It discusses challenges of treating LGBTQIA individuals, including difficulty they may face in accessing treatment as well as the hurdles they face due to stigmatized attitudes, lack of understanding, or outright bias. It notes that supporting LGBTQIA individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) requires the creation of safe spaces without fear of discrimination or additional marginalization. This episode focuses on the ways in which programs are prioritizing the provision of a common language and understanding nuanced experiences faced by LGBTQIA individuals with SUDs.
