This program seeks to build the capacity of states, communities, state and local courts, units of local government, and federally recognized Tribal governments to implement new, or enhance existing, diversion and alternative justice programs for parents in the criminal justice system to mitigate the harmful impacts of incarceration on children and their families to improve child, parent, and family outcomes.
The goal of this program is to establish new and enhance existing family-based alternative justice programs for parents/primary caregivers in the criminal justice system to improve child, parent, and family outcomes. The anticipated outcomes of these programs include increasing family preservation, improving parental attachment, increasing healthy child development, preventing children from entering the foster care system, improving parenting skills, reducing the likelihood of future involvement in the criminal justice system, and reducing the financial impact on the criminal justice and/or child welfare systems.
