Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2020, $669,871)

The Formula Grants Program is authorized under the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act. The purpose of this program is to support state and local delinquency prevention and intervention efforts and juvenile justice system improvements. Supported activities and efforts may include planning and administration, establishing, operating, coordinating, and evaluating projects directly or through grants and contracts with public and private agencies for the development of more effective education, training, research, prevention, diversion, treatment, and rehabilitation programs in the area of juvenile delinquency and programs to improve the juvenile justice system as found in section 221 of the JJDP Act.

The Office of Highway Safety and Justice Programs (OHSJP) within the South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS), will administer the Formula Grant Program to provide state agencies, local units of government, tribal jurisdictions, and private nonprofit agencies resources to both address and prevent juvenile delinquency. The OHSJP will use Formula grant funding to provide technical support and training to sub-grantees, the State Advisory Group, and law enforcement agencies for topics and issues involving the JJDPA. The program will serve all youth in the State of South Carolina under the age of eighteen. OHSJP will also use these funds to continue monitoring state and local institutions for compliance with the JJDPA and the core principles guiding juvenile detention.
