IACP Police and Youth Engagement: Supporting the Role of Law Enforcement in JuvenileJustice Reform

This program furthers the Department's mission by providing grants and cooperative agreements for training and technical assistance to organizations that OJJDP designates.

The purpose of this program is to further the Department’s mission by supporting innovative approaches to building partnerships between youth and law enforcement. This cooperative agreement will support the convening of a youth and law enforcement roundtable and development of an institute on best practices and innovative approaches relating to law enforcement, youth, and juvenile justice. The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), in partnership with the Coalition for Juvenile Justice (CJJ) will implement the Police and Youth Engagement: Supporting the Role of Law Enforcement in Juvenile Justice Reform Project to improve law enforcement’s response to youth victimization, crime, and delinquency. This project will facilitate law enforcement, youth, and family partnerships to contribute to juvenile justice reform. Specifically, IACP will: 1) Introduce law enforcement agencies to best practices and innovative approaches related to juvenile justice reform and work closely with those agencies to assess their current response to youth; 2) Develop, implement, and enhance training and technical assistance (TTA) materials and activities relevant to police and youth engagement; 3) Provide TTA to law enforcement agencies that will build capacity, assess needs, initiate strategic planning, implement appropriate program improvements, evaluate program performance, and help sustain their programs; and 4) Develop agency-specific action plans subsequent to their participation in the Institute.
