Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2013, $871,698)
The Formula Grants Program is authorized under the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act of 1974, as amended. The purpose of this program is to support state and local delinquency prevention and intervention efforts and juvenile justice system improvements. Program areas may include: planning and administration; state advisory group allocation; compliance monitoring; disproportionate minority contact; juvenile justice issues for Native American Indian tribes; prevention of substance abuse by juveniles; prevention of serious and violent crimes by juveniles; prevention of juvenile gang involvement and illegal youth gang activities; prevention of delinquent acts and identification of youth at risk of delinquency; and improvement of juvenile justice system operations, policies, and procedures including establishing a system of graduated sanctions, treatment programs, and aftercare.
The Illinois Department of Human Services' (IDHS) Title II Formula Grant is managed by the Illinois Juvenile Justice Commission, which serves as Illinois' State Advisory Group. The Commission works to ensure Illinois' compliance with the four core requirements of the JJDP Act and to ensure that programs and policies recognize the developmental needs of youth and support their rehabilitation.
The FY 2013 Title II Formula Grant program will support the following programs and activities: Aftercare/Reentry; Alternatives to Detention; Child Abuse/Neglect; Compliance Monitoring; Disproportionate Minority Contact; Gender Specific Services; Jail Removal strategies; Juvenile Justice System Improvement; Mental Health Services; Sex Offender Programming; Substance Abuse Services; and, Youth Advocacy. The Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) and the Juvenile Justice Commission, which serves as the State Advisory Group, will use FY 2014 Title II Formula Grant funds to support programs and policies that recognize the developmental needs of youth and provide for their rehabilitation. Funds will also be used to ensure compliance with the four core requirements of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act.
