Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $450,000)
The OJJDP FY 10 Earmarks Program furthers the Department's mission by providing grants, cooperative agreements, and other assistance authorized by the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act of 1974, as amended, to organizations identified in the Conference Report to accompany the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2010 (P.L. 111-117), H.R. Conf. Rep. No. 111-366 at 702-714.
Putnum County will work collaboratively with the North East Florida Educational Consortium (NEFEC) Dropout Prevention Program to provide targeted schools and educational centers with a web-based curriculum that keeps kids in school and on track to graduate. This program has shown tremendous success with at-risk students in every implementation (35 of Florida's 67 Counties). Florida teachers are successfully working with a cohort of students that they have previously struggled to deal with. The program provides focused curriculum based on the students' needs. The targeted students will be those more likely to dropout of school, commit crimes, and overall be a less productive and happy member of society. By ensuring graduation for these students, NEFEC is setting these students on a path to be a more successful member of the work force and increasing the qualified labor pool in the state of Florida. The program will be tracked by the individual schools and the data reported to NEFEC. An aggregate report will be generated to gauge the success of the program.
