Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $268,305)

The Leadership Academy for African American Males will seek to reduce the delinquency rates and to improve the educational outcomes target population by engaging 75 at-risk African American male students (grades 8-12) in an after-school program designed to improve their academic performance, leadership skills, and resiliency against anti-social behaviors. The primary activities of the Academy will be tutoring, mentoring, service-learning, career planning, and family engagement two days a week, three Saturdays a month, and a four-week summer residential institute. Progress will be evaluated using multivariate analyses using data from several core indicators including academic performance, social skills, and incidence reports of delinquent behavior and parent and student surveys.
