Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $44,717)
The YMCA of Greater New York will support the Young Women's Basketball League at the Vanderbilt and Long Island City YMCA. The Young Women's Basketball League seeks to address the increasing need for programs focusing on the welfare of low-income adolescent females in both Queens and Manhattan. The Long Island City YMCA and Vanderbilt YMCA will provide young women with an opportunity to play competitive, organized basketball, promoting regular cardiovascular exercise through game play and practices. It will also offer even more young women an opportunity to learn leadership skills and teamwork while developing community bonds and instilling positive values such as good sportsmanship. Programming will be delivered in the context of a long term, caring relationship between the students and their advisors.
In addition to learning basketball skills, the program will allow the young women to develop optimism about their future and have positive aspirations to post high school experiences (college, work, career). In addition, the YMCA will work to ensure that parents of program participants will become more involved in their child's development. The YMCA will report on OJJDP's mandatory performance measures.
