Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $424,815)

The Courage to Speak Foundation Substance Abuse Prevention for Children and Parents Capacity Building Project will fully develop, expand, and evaluate its school, community and parent substance abuse prevention education programs. The project will provide more school-based and parent programming in additional Connecticut communities and schools, focus on improving the ability of parents to discuss substance abuse issues with their children, and begin an in-depth evaluation of Courage to Speak model programs. The project will create and develop organizational infrastructure required to take Courage to Speak to the next level in its evolution and growth. Priorities include targeting higher risk communities in Connecticut, particularly in Fairfield County, creating increased demand for Courage to Speak school programs, and broadening the base with rapid expansion of its new parent substance abuse prevention education program.
