Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $174,398)

The Township of Maplewood will undertake an afterschool and summer program to promote positive self-esteem and inspire success among youth, provide a safe afterschool environment and help working families. In addressing these issues, the Township hopes to realize an increase in positive behaviors among youth and a decrease in Juvenile Aid Bureau investigations and juvenile arrests. The program is expected to reach approximately 350 students at the Maplewood Middle School. Youthnet, a nonprofit 501c (3) (pending) umbrella organization for youth services in Maplewood and South Orange, will manage the program from 2:45pm ' 5:45pm, Monday through Friday for 36 weeks during the school year. Collaborators will include but not be limited to the Maplewood Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs Department, the Maplewood Police Department, the Maplewood Middle School, the Maplewood Library and the Maplewood Arts Center. Enrollment statistics for all programs will be kept and the program will monitor the social development of the children and measured by an 'at risk survey' administered to all participants. NCA/NCF
