Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $268,305)
Union City is determined to continue to address the issue of youth violence in the community. The community experienced three youth deaths and two very serious gang-related aggravated assaults in the span of two years. The City is proposing a summer program for the next three summers for the youth of the City. The program will include sports, arts, field trips and a Junior Police Academy with a strong emphasis on mentoring and adult presence. This program will complement existing programs providing comprehensive academic enrichment and counseling programs provided by the Union City Board of Education. The program will focus on but not necessarily be limited to middle school students and serve a minimum of 400 students per summer. This program's effectiveness will be measured and evaluated by pre and post surveys pertaining to effective communication, conflict management, decision making and student awareness of gang activity.
