Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $223,587)
The goal of the Sherman School Project is to assume the cost of operating a full-service Club that incorporates the proven Boys & Girls Clubs of America's education, recreation, health and social skills programs. By increasing membership and average daily attendance from the after-school programs to the full-service club programs, the Clubs' goal is to raise test scores and graduation rates while reducing absence rates and negative classroom behavior. Boys and Girls Club of Toledo (BGCT) aims to impact north Toledo and Sherman School by revitalizing an interest in school and student/parent involvement. Further, BGCT will serve at least 100 youth a day by lengthening the time spent in a school setting thus increasing 'contact' hours of each student who becomes a Club member. The objective for operating Club programs is to enable members to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. BGCT is able to measure program participation and membership attendance using a bar code system associated with a Club Kid's membership identification and an internet-based program called Kid Trax.
