Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $245,946)
The TeamMates Mentoring Program will utilize a one-to-one, school-based, developmental mentoring model to recruit, screen, train, match, and support mentors for youth in the Congressional Third District of Nebraska. The goal of this project is to improve the organizational capacity, program quality and system effectiveness of the TeamMates Mentoring Program. These goals will enable youth to experience a consistent relationship with a caring adult. Mentors will be given the tools needed to build resiliency in youth. These tools and staff support will help mentors develop a meaningful mentoring relationship and improve mentor retention for the program. Program progress will be measured by the establishment of new partnerships per year; 400 adults recruited to mentor youth over a period of three years; Program Coordinators and Regional Coordinator providing mentor training for 400 new mentors; increased training, education and awareness of the importance of mentoring 24 or more hours per school year; the implementation of a survey for mentors and mentees to determine quality of relationships and effectiveness of program; a separate data system to collect demographics, grades, attendance and behavior for youth in the Congressional Third District of Nebraska; and the development of marketing materials and mentor recruitment video.
