Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $254,889)

The TWIGS program at the Baltimore School for the Arts provides free arts education to under-served elementary and middle school students in Baltimore City. Students attend classes in dance, music, theatre or visual arts taught by specially trained professional artist/teachers. Classes are offered from one to three times a week after school and/or on Saturdays. TWIGS will serve 700 second through eighth-grade students from close to 90 Baltimore City public schools; all classified Title I with high percentages of economically disadvantaged children, and about 40 parochial schools with similar demographic profiles. Students who attend TWIGS join a safe, reliable and stimulating after-school program, most for successive years. These students receive the highest caliber artistic training and reap the academic and social benefits associated with after school programs and with arts education. NCA/NCF
