Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $400,000)

The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa's 'Career and Technology Education' Tribal Youth Grant will provide a career and technology program aimed at retaining and/or reentering students into the school setting until successful completion of the appropriate education credits needed for graduation. The program will also provide a curriculum that will help make the transition from school to work easier for young people. The goal is to improve student learning, keep students in school until they graduate, and to provide relevant experiences that integrate school-based and work-based learning. This project will provide the impetus for schools and the business community to collaborate in providing real world experiences. This will be accomplished with a school-to-work program and needed support services. The project will be geared for students who are less comfortable in a contemporary school setting and who may require a more comprehensive approach to remain in school. The evaluation design and analysis will be done by the UND Native American Center. An external evaluator will conduct the evaluation. The data will reflect whether the activities of the project reduced the drop out rate of targeted students at Turtle Mountain High School by 50%. CA/NCF
