Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2006, $133,276)
The Dorcas Outreach Center for Kids (DOCK) provides a holistic program, aimed at reducing key risk factors for juvenile delinquency and truancy. This project serves children of the Booker T. Washington neighborhood, which is the poorest (86%) in the city of Melbourne, Florida. It also has the highest rates of juvenile crime and truancy in Brevard County. Children are guided, on a daily basis, by DOCK staff and volunteers to improve social, self-management, and peer-pressure resistance skills. The DOCK will move into a new facility in late 2006 and seeks assistance with first year operations. The DOCK will double its service population from 20 to 40 daily. At least 200 children (unduplicated) will be served by DOCK programs. Progress will be measured through attendance tracking, grading period comparisons, completion of life enrichment classes, and testing associated with the classes.
