Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2005, $197,329)
The Muscogee County School District, through their Teenage Parenting Center, will provide their 'Now One Foot, Now the Other'Taking Steps Together for a Better Life' project to teenage parents in Columbus, Georgia. The program will help teenage parents and their child with their physical, emotional and social needs so they can provide them with the cognitive skills necessary to create a safe environment for living. Parents enrolled in the program will receive parenting courses along with instruction during 'parent and child time together'. Parents will also be provided access to representatives from WIC and Medicaid. Children of teenage parents will be provided with age appropriate curriculum. The Teenage Parenting Center will also provide services that will allow the parent to remain in school so he or she can complete his or her high school education. The project will serve at least 200 teenage parents over a one year period. The program will submit categorical assistance progress reports in GMS that will report on fourteen (14) performance measures including: the number of teenage parents that receive high-school diplomas, the number of repeat births to teenage parents enrolled in the program, documented improvement in parenting skills (such as properly bathing the child and correctly disciplining the child), and the child's score on vocabulary tests and the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale.
