The Mary Mitchell Family and Youth Center will focus on the importance of after school activities for children and teens in preventing high risk behavior. The Crotona section of the Bronx is located in the most impoverished Congressional District in the country. The community is comprised of 33% children under the age of 18 and half of the households with children are run by single parents, (2000 Census). The Mary Mitchell Family and Youth Center's After School Program will ensure that 100 youth have a safe environment after school and access to activities to develop learning skills in martial arts, computer technology, dance, photography, sports, art and reading literacy. Progress will be measured by the number of participants attending the program, completing assignments, and achieving benchmarks. NCA/NCF
