Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2004, $247,369)
The Support and Training of At-Risk Students (STARS) Project is a three-pronged intervention program designed to combat the disproportionately high rates of school dropouts, alcohol and drug abuse, lack of parental involvement, and victimization of adjudicated youth in the barrio of Corpus Christi, Texas. The STAR project will address academic issues through a tutoring and mentoring component (Self-Efficacy). Family involvement and reduction of familial stress will be addressed by the Family Connectivity component by providing family enrichment and anger management seminars and sponsoring weekly healthy family alternative programming. The Healthy Interaction component will address issues of participant and familial substance abuse, participant victimization, and inadequate coping skills by providing assessment, counseling, and prevention/intervention programs. All components will implement research-based strategies.NCA/NCF
