Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $571,500)
The State of Alaska’s Division of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) is responsible for all probation, detention, and institutional treatment services for delinquent youth in Alaska. This project will serve Alaska’s statewide juvenile population, ages 10-18 years old, which is approximately 12.5% of the Sate of Alaska’s population. The priority goals for Alaska’s Title II Formula Grant are: Maintain compliance with the four court mandates of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency prevention Act (JJDP Act) as reauthorized in 2018; 1) Compliance monitoring activities have been bolstered to ensure for interest of justice policies within the DJJ, and partner agencies within the Department of Corrections, Department of Public Safety, and the State of Alaska’s Court System; 2) Promote safe and responsible individuals, families and communities by increasing the number of juveniles who remain crime free; 3) Reduce overall youth recidivism rates, specifically targeting recidivism rates for Alaska Native youth; and 4) Enhance Alaska’s juvenile justice system through coordinated system improvement efforts. Implementation activities for this project will fall under the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Program Areas: Planning and Administration; Mentoring, Counseling, & Vocational Training Programs; Substance Abuse Treatment; Positive Youth Development; Mental Health Services; Girls; Compliance Monitoring; Racial & Ethnic Disparities; Native American Tribe Programs; Separation of Juveniles from Adult Inmates; and State Advisory Group (SAG) Allocation.
