Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2004, $39,579)
The Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention Project seeks to increase youth perception of harm related to underage drinking by: 1) raising parent awareness and commitment to actively discourage underage drinking, and 2) educating youth in media literacy to counter the powerful influence of advertising and entertainment media in shaping perceptions of behavioral norms. To reach the youth (12-17 year olds) and parents of Saratoga County, trained facilitators will conduct media literacy workshops for students and parents during the 2004-2005 academic year. The program will also conduct parent-focused events throughout the county designed to enhance awareness of the dangers of underage drinking and to stress the importance of maintaining a clear message against underage drinking. The Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention Project will measure project performance by the number of students attending workshops, increased understanding of media deconstruction, increased awareness of advertising/media influence on perception of underage drinking harmfulness, the number of parents attending forums, and the number of documented parent pledges in response to the campaign. The grantee will report these measures to OJJDP in their Categorical Assistance Progress Reports.NCA/NCF
