Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $99,414)
The Interagency Steering Committee of Imperial County Coalition serves Imperial County, CA, a mix of suburban and rural areas with a combined population of 150,800. The goals of the program are to: 1) reduce substance abuse among youth and, over time, among adults; 2) collaboratively strengthen local government delivery of substance abuse prevention, intervention, and treatment services; and 3) increase community awareness of the threat posed by youth substance abuse. To achieve these goals the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) continue local media campaign to increase the awareness of the danger that substance abuse poses to the community;
2) disseminate information on effective program strategies and positive results;
3) provide prevention education sessions throughout the county to promote healthy drug-free life-styles;
4) increase awareness of risk and harm of drug abuse and drug availability through the Annual Interagency Youth Conference for Life and agencies serving youth;
5) conduct community forums to identify family and youth enrichment, and community involvement opportunities;
6) increase collaboration through coalition linkages with state and federal law enforcement agencies; and
7) reduce substance through Friday Night Life, Club Live and Kids Live programs at elementary, middle, and high schools.
