PROJECT SUMMARY FOR 2001-JN-FX-0146
The City of Dover is the fiscal agent for the Dover Coalition for Youth. The coalition serves the Seacoast area (southeastern part) of New Hampshire that has a mix of suburban, commercial, and rural communities. The goals of the coalition are to: 1) reduce the use of substance abuse among the youth and, eventually, adults; and 2) strengthen the collaboration among communities, governments and private non-profit agencies to support community coalition efforts to prevent substance abuse. A variety of strategies will be used to achieve these goals, including:
1) increase the perception of youth and parents that substance abuse is harmful and risky;
2) build protective factors in the community that are known to be associated with reduced substance use;
3) involve youth in delivering an anti-substance abuse message to their peers and to younger youth;
4) increase students' perception that being a non-substance user is socially safe;
5) use multiple mechanisms, including media, classroom opportunities, and community events, to communicate core messages;
6) increase the number of new members (both individuals and organizations) and increase the percentage of members who regularly attend coalition activities and meetings; and
7) build public, private, and non-profit collaborations within the community to deal with the problems related to substance abuse.
