Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $100,000)

The United Way of Merrimack County is the fiscal agent for the Concord Substance Abuse Coalition. The coalition serves Concord, New Hampshire, a suburban area with a population of 40,687. The goals of the coalition are to: 1) reduce substance use and abuse among youth and, over time, among adults by changing community and parental norms which support underage drinking and the use of illegal substances; and 2) strengthen the already existing prevention community by involving more individuals and groups in collaborative substance abuse prevention planning and execution.
To achieve these goals, the coalition will continue utilizing and implementing the following strategies:
1) offer substance abuse prevention training for adults, parents, and youth using the Prime for Life for Adults and Prime for Life Under 21" curriculums;
2) collaborate with the local middle and high schools to provide opportunities for students to create and produce television shows, radio public service announcements, and newsletters regarding substance abuse prevention;
3) work with the Concord Police Department and the Bureau of Liquor Enforcement to expand law enforcement efforts in the community regarding underage use of alcohol; and,
4. network with other agencies and organizations within the community to foster collaborative efforts to reduce substance use. CA/NCF
