Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $100,000)
The Source: A Boys and Girls Club is the fiscal agent for the Youth Service Support Group that serves the Lake Traverse Reservation in both North and South Dakota. The population on the reservation is 10,840 residents. Program goals include the reduction of substance abuse among Native American and disadvantaged youth of the Lake Traverse Reservation and the strengthening of coalition building and community partnerships. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) increase youth resistance to negative peer pressure and dangerous situations by training them in SMART Moves programs and by providing support to community programs specific to this community;
2) train key personnel in SMART Moves programs to enhance the staff's ability to increase the recruitment of the target population;
3) increase the number of community partners in the Youth Service Support Network; and
4)increase public service announcements to the community on prevention initiatives.
