PROJECT SUMMARY FOR 2001-JN-FX-0047 (S-1)

The Community Coalition for Drug and Violence Prevention, with the King Academy as their fiscal agent, is a community-based coalition active in collaborative efforts for children and youth since 2000. The coalition provides services for the City of Inkster which is located southwest of Detroit. Supported by a 22 member board, the coalition works to enhance the well-being of youth and families through effective substance abuse prevention programs and strategies. To achieve the overall program goal of advancing community efforts to deliver effective alcohol and other drug prevention strategies and promote dissemination of information across sectors regarding effective strategies for substance abuse and violence prevention, the coalition will: 1) increase the knowledge and skills of the coalition members to engage in collaborative planning and work efforts; 2) increase the knowledge and skill-based of the coalition regarding current, proven alcohol and other drug abuse prevention and reduction programs and strategies; 3) disseminate information regarding effective alcohol and other drug abuse prevention strategies and provide assistance for replication of effective programming and strategies to local schools and youth-serving organizations; 4) expand and refine the implementation of the Second Step Program at the King Academy to include outreach to faith-based youth programs in the community; 5) engage local businesses in advancing the coalition efforts by disseminating information regarding community youth services and offering family discounts and special offers; and 6) engage in ongoing tracking of coalition progress and reflection regarding barriers to progress in order to record their progress and continuously improve program operation.
