The purpose of this supplemental award is to engage in the second year of the American Academy of Pediatrics Violence Intervention and Prevention Program (VIPP.) The project is developing a core program to assist healthcare professionals implement scientifically based and culturally competent counseling on topics contributing to violent behaviors. Underlying the development of VIPP is the belief that pediatricians, through screening, counseling and referral in the context of routine health care maintenance, can reduce injuries caused by interpersonal violence. This can be most effectively accomplished through the development of a standardized protocol to assist pediatricians in this task. The second year of this project will to develop the overall design and strategy for VIPP and make the decisions necessary to begin development of the materials.
