The Schenectady Municipal Housing Authority serves as the fiscal agent for the Schenectady County Substance Abuse Prevention Partnership. Located in upstate New York, the coalition serves Schenectady County with a population of 146,555, of which a high density lives in the urban, economically-challenged area of the county.
The goals of the program are to: 1) reduce substance abuse by changing youths' and adults' favorable attitudes toward the use of substances and 2) serve as a catalyst for community coordination and proactive change leading to coalition sustainability. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) serve as a community resource center for valid research, technical assistance, assessment information, and networking;
2) provide comprehensive coordination, training, and be a resource for science-based practices in prevention;
3) conduct outreach and marketing of coalition initiatives via website to parents, school districts, and youth for accurate information and skill development strategies encouraging healthy beliefs and clear standards; and
4) provide science-based prevention initiatives that focus on developing skills such as decision making, increasing knowledge, and providing a safe environment for young people from pre-K through adolescence. The coalition will utilize the Smart Moves program that encourages youth to be leaders, to have opportunities for pro-social involvement, and to reduce substance abuse; and the OK program that focuses on 3rd-5th graders for early education and intervention for at risk youth.CA/NCF
