Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2000, $100,000)
The King County Department of Health and Human Services is the fiscal agent for the Community Organizing Program Core Advisory Board. The coalition serves the Northshore, Shoreline, Central Seattle, Black Diamond and Vashon Island sections of King County, WA. These five sections in the county have a combined population of 1,774,000. The goals of the coalition are to: 1) reduce substance abuse among youth and, over time, among adults; and 2) establish and strengthen collaboration among communities, nonprofit organizations and federal, state, and local government agencies. In order to achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies;
1) facilitate meaningful involvement of local community coalitions located in high need areas;
2) guide and implement local coalition-led prevention strategies focused on high risk problem areas in order to reduce substance abuse and violence;
3) increase youth protective factors and decrease risk factors of those youth at risk of entering the juvenile justice system;
4) increase collaboration among counseling agencies, schools, and the juvenile justice system;
5) establish and replicate effective practices, models and guidelines for faith- based coalitions and youth service center coalitions; and,
6) train and recruit systems for youth and community members who are dedicated to supporting prevention efforts. CA/NCF
