Dottes: A coalition of community builders serves Wyandoote County, KS, an urban area with a population of 157,461, which is 51% White, 28% Black, 16% Hispanic, 7% American Indian or Alaskan, 1.6% Asian, and 8% Other. The goals of the program are to: 1) Reduce substance abuse among youth and over time adults by addressing factors that serve to increase the risk of substance abuse and the factors that serve to minimize the risk; and 2) strengthen collaboration among communities; federal, state and local governments and non-profit organizations. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies: 1) deliver research-based curriculum to children at early childhood education centers; 2) develop prevention action plans specific to the community; 3) obtain commitments from five community organizations and units of government to enhance collaboration; 4) implement a drug-endangered child protocol in collaboration with law enforcement, medical personnel and social service providers; 5) introduce research-based curriculum in at least one religious school and one public school as a pilot project; 6) meet with officials from the four school districts to encourage participation in KCTC student survey; and 7) engage five community agencies to serve as access points to provide application forms and technical assistance to residents in need.CA/NCF
