Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2000, $87,173)

The Dothan-Houston County Substance Abuse Partnership is the fiscal agent for the coalition with the same name. The coalition provides substance abuse prevention and education services for at-risk youth and young adults in the Wiregrass area of southeastern Alabama. The Wiregrass area includes the City of Dothan and rural Houston County with a total population of 88,000.
The coalition is entering its fifth year of the Drug-Free Communities Support Program with an emphasis on extending substance abuse and prevention efforts outside Dothan County. The program goal is to energize the coalition and community to reduce substance abuse amoung youth and adults in the community.
The coalition will achieve these goals by implementing the following strategies:
1) utilize a newly expanded website to continue to address community and societal norms that appear to condone substance abuse;
2) improve and expand the coalition to six surrounding counties and establish a larger Wiregrass Coalition;
3) reinforce knowledge, attitudes and behavior of drug-free living through the implementation of the Red Ribbon Week Program;
4) educate at least 150 professionals, business leaders, civic and local government officials, law enforcement, faith-based representatives and community citizens by sponsoring, in collaboration with coalition member Troy State University, the Fourth Annual Substance Abuse Conference.
