Family Connection, Incorporated is the fiscal agent for the Shelby County Coalition for Safe and Drug-Free Communities. The coalition serves Shelby County, Alabama, an area with approximately 145,000 residents. The goals of the program are to: 1) increase the level of perceived harm from Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs (ATOD) use among youth; and 2) increase ATOD awareness, coordination and cooperation among Shelby County communities. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) conduct a counter advertising campaign to increase the knowledge of the dangers of ATOD use among middle and high school students;
2) maintain tobacco free zones around area parks and athletic fields and restaurants located within one mile of the community schools;
3) distribute the coalition developed "What You Need to Know" educational handbooks to parents of school age children;
4) heighten community awareness of ATOD use by involving community leaders and businesses in Red Ribbon Week, Alcohol Awareness month, and the "Creating Lasting Family Connections Impactors Program";
5) distribute anti-drug literature through educational booths at the local community events; and
6) partner with local businesses to print anti-drug slogans on register receipts and monthly statements.
