FY 2003 Drug-Free Communities Support Program Application for Continuation Funding

Westside Community Schools - District 66 acts as the fiscal agent for the Omaha Community Partnership coalition. The group serves the greater Omaha, NE, metropolitan area, an urban locale with a population of approximately 28,625. Since its inception, the Omaha Community Partnership coalition has recorded a number of significant accomplishments, most notably, providing information to the community about substance abuse issues through media coverage, a Web site, a prevention directory, conferences, and electronic newsletters. In addition, the group has implemented successful programs such as ALL STARS, the Safe Homes Pledge Network, and parent seminars.
To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and strengthening community anti-drug coalitions, the Omaha Community Partnership coalition, in its fifth year, will implement the following strategies: 1) providing a series of parent workshops focusing on raising safe and healthy children; 2) having the Nebraska Council to Prevent Alcohol and Drug Abuse provide in-service training to all elementary staff on successful prevention strategies and how to incorporate these methods into their classes; 3) increasing parent involvement in drug prevention efforts by re-energizing a program for parents to pledge to keep safe, drug-free homes for children and developing networks of parents committed to this endeavor; 4) providing the research-based, proven ALL STARS drug prevention training, using trained facilitators; 5) supporting the development of a student-created video that provides career path information and consequences of risky behavior; 6) providing methamphetamine, marijuana, hallucinogen, and cocaine information to students and staff through a variety of mediums; 7) providing parents with information on local drug issues and parenting skills via a quarterly newsletter; 8) collaborating with the district media specialist to increase media coverage of drug prevention events; 9) hosting one districtwide conference for youth, parents, and community members; 10) serving as a catalyst to increase citizen participation by utilizing the agencies on the coalition and to expand greater collaboration among all sectors and organizations of the community; 11) receiving commitments from local merchants that they won't sell alcohol and tobacco to minors; 12) assessing the effectiveness of community substance abuse efforts by implementing the American Drug and Alcohol Survey (ADAS); 13) working with Nebraska state drug prevention agencies to build and enhance the Internet-based network to disseminate information on prevention strategies; and 14) inviting Adopt-a-School partners to participate in all drug-free efforts throughout the year.
