Fy 2003 Drug Free Communities Support Program Application for Continuation Funding

The Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Cheyenne Nation coalition serves the Northern Cheyenne Nation Indian Reservation and the Ashland public school in Montana, an area of 7,500 people, 60 percent of whom are children; up to 70 percent of the population is unemployed and the average household income is $11,000 annually. In its most recent grant year, the coalition continued to implement its program goals and objectives by holding SMART Moves classes with a total of 2,370 participants; sponsoring the annual Youth Summit, with a total of 664 participants, and the Junior Youth Summit, with 220 participants; sponsoring two teen dances, for New Year's Eve with 377 in attendance and for graduation with 217 in attendance; supervising 45 youth who were ordered by the court to perform community service hours at the Boys & Girls Club; conducting Quick Smart classes held in conjunction with RBI Baseball summer leagues, with a total of 60 participants; and holding lock-in events where youth have overnight activities at the club and are given information in age-appropriate formats on the issue of substance abuse.
To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and strengthening community antidrug coalitions, the coalition will implement the following strategies: 1) increasing the number of teen peer Train the Trainers by 10 percent; 2) expanding the number of facilitators trained to implement and deliver SMART Moves curriculums by 10 percent; 3) increasing the number of families supporting children with effective parenting and supervision; 4) continuing facilitation of parenting classes, parent support groups, and network referral services within the community and regionally; 5) continuing to host a minimum of four lock-ins per year, combining recreation activities and prevention-based education with the dissemination of information; 6) continuing to provide Teen Night at the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Cheyenne Nation five nights a week; 7) organizing two summer camps, one targeting youth 12 and under and the other targeting youth 13-19, which focus on risks involved with alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; and 8) providing nightly transportation home from the club.
