The Washington County Commissioners act as the fiscal agent for the Washington County Substance Abuse Council coalition. The group serves Washington County, IN, a rural area with a population of approximately 27,000. Since its inception, the Washington County Substance Abuse Council has recorded a number of significant accomplishments, most notably, delivering substance abuse information at community events such as the Indiana State Fair and the 4-H Carnival of Fun. In addition, the group has raised awareness of prevention issues through television appearances and newspaper articles.
To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and strengthening community antidrug coalitions, the Washington County Substance Abuse Council coalition, in its fifth year, will implement the following strategies: 1) delivering the Star Alliance for Drug Free Youth curriculum to area middle school students; 2) increasing the use of asset enhancing education/prevention programming and alternative youth activities delivered outside the school setting; 3) strengthening collaboration at the local, state, regional, and national levels; 4) increasing citizen participation in, and understanding of, substance abuse reduction and asset building strategies; and 5) expanding special events programming. ca/ncf
