The city of Paterson is the fiscal agent for the Coalition for a Drug-Free Paterson. The coalition serves the city of Paterson, NJ, an ethnically diverse city with a population of 149,222, about half of which is Hispanic. In its most recent grant year, the coalition continued to implement its program goals and objectives by participating in outreach efforts to the community with a series of meetings in which representatives from the coalition targeted parents, youth, and the community at large and informed the public about drugs, drug trafficking, and the increasing gang, drugs, and violence situation in the city; developing and presenting two quarterly substance abuse prevention training workshops; observing October as Substance Abuse Awareness Month; implementing a Faith-Based Youth Outreach Day; and holding a Creative Writing Contest, in which 327 students submitted entries--poems, raps, essays, and short stories--on the theme "My Future's Bright, I'm Drug Free!"

To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and strengthening community antidrug coalitions, this coalition will implement the following strategies: 1) maintaining the coalition Web site and providing updates to help it evolve into a more comprehensive site that will provide parents, teachers, concerned citizens, and youth with up-to-date information and knowledge on the Drug-Free Community Support Program and the efforts of the Coalition for a Drug-Free Paterson and other alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs (ATOD) activities in the city of Paterson; 2) continuing to develop and present the coalition cable TV talk show; 3) expanding the level of training available to the members of the Coalition for a Drug-Free Paterson; 4) continuing to observe the month of October as Substance Abuse Awareness Month in grades pre-kindergarten through 12; 5) continuing to hold the annual Creative Writing Contest; and 6) establishing a Youth Council presence in all three high schools and secondary academies.
