PROJECT SUMMARY FOR 98-JN-FX-0046 (S-4)
The Kawaihau Community Leadership Coalition's (the Coalition) goals are to reduce substance abuse in the Kawaihau District and to build a community coalition through the objectives of increasing community information, developing awareness of the effects that drugs have on the community, and to provide education to strengthen family resiliency skills. The coalition is recognized by the community and positioned to provide leadership in response to substance abuse and prevention issues for the district. The DFCSP is in its fourth year of operation and the positive impact on the community is noticeably visible, that include drug-free banners, signage on fences and walls, declared drug-free events, discussions at civic and church agendas, work-site trainings, and community involvement and other prevention activities. The Advisory Youth Council, whose membership consists of representatives from youth organizations, actively represents the cross-section of community youth groups sourcing from churches, schools, community and cultural arenas. All groups make a commitment by signing a drug-free policy that is incorporated in their individual organization's standards. Year five will be the year that continues and expands the concept of partnerships and prevention efforts with the community.
