Opioid Affected Youth Initiative Webinar: Building a Board: Planning and Implementation Strategies for Developing Youth Advisory Boards

Participants will gain a better understanding of the critical role of the youth voice and delve into how youth advisory boards (YABs) can support the continued efforts to improve the lives of youth and families impacted by opioids and other substance use disorders (SUDs).

In partnership with the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, this webinar will provide an increased understanding of YABs and explore the effectiveness of engaging youth impacted by opioids and other SUDs in an advisory capacity. It will focus on targeted approaches for the establishment of a YAB, including key considerations when recruiting appropriate youth as well as the expertise of support staff and local community organizations in ensuring that these relationships are leveraged in order to effectively highlight issues of importance, enhance recovery support systems, and inform juvenile justice reform through the lens of youth with lived experiences.

Learning Objectives:

  • Determine the purposes for a YAB to guide the development of a mission statement and framework.
  • Identify target populations, qualities, characteristics, and sizes.
  • Assemble recruitment strategies, including methods to involve community partners.
  • Compare expertise needed from staff members, youth participants, and local community organizations.
