The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges Child Abuse and Neglect Institute (CANI) aims to provide judges with the knowledge and skills necessary to preside over an effective child abuse and neglect court process and to improve outcomes for children and families involved in the child welfare system.

The institute is taught by expert judicial faculty and other subject matter experts. Graduates of CANI's week-long training program have included judges who are newly assigned to child abuse and neglect cases, as well as more experienced judges who wish to stay up-to-date on changing laws and policies and nationally recommended best practice strategies.

Priority will be given to judicial officers who hear child welfare dependency cases and who:

  • Have not attended CANI in the past
  • Have started hearing dependency cases in the last couple of years (or will soon)
  • Agree to participating in the full four days

Date Created: February 18, 2022
