Supporting Youth and Families Impacted by Opioid Abuse (In Focus Fact Sheet)

In response to the nation’s devastating opioid crisis, OJJDP awarded almost $41 million during fiscal years 2018 and 2019 for opioid-focused programs and specialized training and technical assistance. The funding provides mentoring services for substance-abusing youth and those at risk, and supports youth and families through treatment and recovery to reduce youth involvement in the juvenile justice and foster care systems. The funding also supports child abuse training for judicial and court personnel.

Child Protection: Dependency Courts (In Focus Fact Sheet)

Juvenile and family courts play a critical role in preventing the victimization of children and ensuring they have safe and stable homes. Between fiscal years 2017 and 2019, OJJDP awarded more than $34.5 million to improve the court system’s handling of child maltreatment cases. Much of the funding supports local programs that recruit and train volunteer advocates to prevent children from getting lost in the legal or social service systems.

Emergency Planning for Juvenile Residential Facilities (In Focus Fact Sheet)

OJJDP provided more than $1.2 million between fiscal years 2017 and 2019 to help juvenile residential facilities nationwide prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies. Funding through the Juvenile Justice Emergency Planning Demonstration program supports a range of activities, including designing and implementing emergency plans, conducting vulnerability assessments, establishing agreements with organizations and professionals to supplement support following an emergency, and purchasing equipment.

OJJDP 2019 Annual Report to Congress: Victims of Child Abuse Act Reauthorization Act

The Victims of Child Abuse Act (VOCA) Reauthorization Act of 2018 requires the Attorney General to submit an annual report to the Senate and House Committees on the Judiciary. This report provides an overview of OJJDP’s five VOCA interrelated funding programs: children’s advocacy centers (CACs) membership and accreditation; regional CACs; subgrants to local CACs, state chapters of CACs, and multidisciplinary teams; training and technical assistance for child abuse professionals; and training and technical assistance for child abuse prosecutors.
